The Qld government has gone live with a statewide Dog Breeder Register that is mandatory for every puppy born after 26 May 2017. To sell pups after that date, you are required to have a supply number from the register that provides lifetime traceability from the breeder of origin. This affects ALL pet and purebred dog breeders in the pet industry in Qld.
All dog breeders and suppliers, including pet shops, must display the supply number when GIVING AWAY, SELLING or ADVERTISING dogs for sale. The supply number must also be included in the microchip information of every dog born after 26 May 2017.
Vets are able to check the online register to confirm a supply number is valid before micro-chipping a dog and will include the supply number in the dog’s microchip information.
Prospective buyers can also search the Queensland Dog Breeder Register for the supply number.
If the number is valid, vets and potential owners can access some contact information for the person who bred the dog. This allows contact with the breeder to ask questions about the conditions in which the dog was bred, and confirm the identity of the breeder before buying the dog.
If the supply number is invalid or not for the person selling the dog, or if there are welfare concerns, the matter can be logged via the Register.

Breeders must register their dogs within 28 days of birth.
This system applies to both regular and “occasional” breeders and there are some exemptions for some working dog producers.
INTERSTATE BREEDERS: no Supply number is needed IF the commercial transaction takes place outside the state. So if you are wholesaling puppies into Qld you MAY need to register, but if the person buys from you in another state and you are simply delivering into Qld, NO Supplier number is needed.
