Caring For My Dog

Dogs are engaging pets that require special care. More than 3 million households in Australia own and love their dogs. They are not hard to own, but you must “follow the rules” for dog care, especially if you have small children or other pets.

What is a dog?

Dogs are carnivores (meat eaters) of the Genus Canidae. They can have a long life span  – up to 17 years – with the “general rule” that the smaller the dog is the longer it may live.

What kinds are there?

There are more than 200 recognised dog breeds in Australia, as well as hybrids (deliberate purebred crosses eg labradoodle) and crossbreds (“accidental” crosses eg “mutts”).

Pets Australia members can LOG IN to access this guide – including the kinds of Dog, dog language, dog feeding, The healthy dog, dog play, dogs and Australian summers, dog living, dog foods, and dog facts that could win you prizes at trivia nights!
