Professional Grooming Training

There are four  levels of training available in the grooming industry and you will find details below:

Level 1. Basic Home Grooming & Care

Also known as “Home Grooming #101” this intensive 1 day course will teach you how to care for your pet at home between grooms, or it’s a great taster course for those who aren’t sure if grooming is the right career for them. Retailing at around $500, it can be used as one unit towards a Cert III under certain conditions.

Level 2: Grooming Technician course

This course ” gets you on your way” in the industry by developing you as a “salon junior” or “bather brusher”. This level gets you going as a salon employee or a mobile dogwash operator and starts you on your training journey. Retailing at around $2K, it’s a really intensive week-10 days and can be used for up to 5 units towards your Cert III under certain conditions.

Level 3. Professional Pet Groomer

This level is the level that you see in many salons as a salon senior or operator of a mobile salon. You can gain these skills through a number of private colleges, as well as TAFE studies to Cert III level (provided you choose the grooming electives available in the Cert III course) PLUS industry experience that will hone your skills and increase your speed to commercial speeds. Some of these courses recognise the Grooming Technician Course as “prior learning” to reduce the cost of studying at this level.

Level 4. Master Groomer

This level is the level that you see often in competitions – the level of being able to produce ‘breed specific’ grooms for all of the common breeds, at commercial speeds, as well as knowing about the history and development of each breed, corrective grooming, and a number of specialised techniques including carding, hand stripping, and sculpting. This is an international course of study and certification is performed in Australia based on USA standards.
